What dye-sublimation actually is
Worth understanding, because "printed towel" covers two completely different things and only one of them is worth buying.
The cheap version is a heat transfer: a design printed onto a vinyl or film carrier and pressed onto the fabric. It sits on the surface as a distinct layer. It feels like plastic, it stops that patch of towel absorbing anything, and after a season of washing it starts to crack and lift at the edges.
Dye-sublimation is a chemical process rather than an adhesive one. Under heat and pressure the solid dye sublimates — turns straight to gas without becoming liquid — and that gas penetrates the polyester fiber, which has opened up under the same heat. As it cools, the fiber closes and the dye solidifies inside the filament. There is no added layer at all. Run your hand across a sublimated towel and you cannot feel where the design starts.
This is also why sublimation needs polyester. The process bonds to synthetic fiber; it will not hold on cotton. Our towels are 100% polyester microfiber waffle-weave, which is what makes the color both possible and permanent.
