Golf Bunker Tips From the One and Only Phil Mickelson

Learn from one of the greatest short game players in golf history - Phil Mickelson shares his secrets for escaping bunkers with ease.

The 2x4 Block Drill

A great way to engrain the proper bunker shot feeling is with a 2X4 block that is about a foot or 2 long:

  1. Place the block on the ground parallel with the target line
  2. Place the club head behind the block
  3. Push it down the line and through to the finish position

This drill helps golfers develop the sensation of driving through the sand properly. The key is to keep the clubhead moving through the sand, not digging into it.

Phil's Keys to Bunker Success

  • Open your stance and clubface
  • Hit the sand 2 inches behind the ball
  • Accelerate through impact
  • Follow through to a full finish
